A Built-Up Roof (BUR) system is a time-tested roofing solution that consists of layers of bitumen, felts, and surfacing materials. These layers are "built up" on-site to create a strong, watertight membrane that provides excellent protection against the elements. When properly installed, a BUR system offers durable and long-lasting performance. However, as the roof ages, it may develop weaknesses, such as the separation of tar paper from parapet walls, curb units, and drainage pipes. Environmental factors like rain, snow, heat, and wind can exacerbate these issues, leading to cracks and increased ply-separation.
